This pandemic and lockdowns means that I can finally spend hours in front of tv, watching Netflix without feeling guilty of being unproductive. I’ve been binge watching Money Heist (La Cada de Papel) and it’s got me thinking, if I was doing a heist what car would I invest in? Here is my top picks. But at the end the day, suitability of the cars come down to the type and location of heist.
This is the movie getaway car. You’ll look good when you’ve got 10 police cars on your tail and you’ll be getting heaps of attention as you’re driving through the town but you’ll have 441 kW of power at your disposal and who knows, you might be able to get away with it.
Range Rovers are very popular and that’s what makes it the perfect getaway car. If a car chase does take place you’ll have 423 kW of power to be able to getaway also, don’t forget Range Rover’s off-roading capabilities! You’ll be able to pull away from the cops and turn off onto the terrain and they’ll think you’ve vanished!
The reason why the Land Cruiser made it on this list is very similar to the Range Rover Sport, but it’s probably the cheaper option. It’ll be fast enough to get away and it’s a king off road and basically indestructible so you’ll be able to turn off and set off into the wilderness and you’ll be alright.
My favourite hatch! This is thing is proper quick (Google the car drag racing a Porsche 911) and it’s small, so if your trying to get away in a beautiful European city, you’ll be able to fit through small alleys to be able to outrun the Policias. Maybe don’t get it in a bright colour though.
The reason I think the Audi S3 might be better than the RS3 and the AMG A45 S is because it’s more subtle compared to those two. It’s not as loud so it draws less attention and it looks more subtle as well since it doesn’t have that spoiler in the back like the A45 S. It’s still powerful and quick, producing 213 kW of power combined with Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system and you’ll have pretty strong chances of getting away.
You’ve done a heist and now need to get out of there as quickly and quietly as possible and what car better to do that than an electric car like the Tesla Model S. You’ll be speeding away quietly, not drawing any attentions to yourself.
BMW’s M5 is fast and spacious enough to fit the rest of your team and you’ll merge onto a highway or motorway and cruise your way down the smooth road and away from the police. Also, saloon BMWs are relatively common and you’re likely to blend in if your M5 is a subtle colour like Silver or Black.
In case you haven’t figured it out by now, the key to a great getaway car is subtle yet powerful and there’s nothing more subtle than a minivan. Bisimoto’s Honda Odyssey is perfect, its V6 makes over 1,000 horsepower so you’ll be able to getaway in case of a pursuit.
Didn’t expect this did you? Think about it though, what’s a more common car than a Toyota Corolla? Nothing. Regardless of where you live in the world, there are so many Toyota Corollas (specifically silver ones) that the police would lose you in a second. Still though it might be a good idea to upgrade your Corolla and have a few extra horsepowers in there just in case they’re needed.
Yes, I know technically the Zonda R isn’t road legal but what like a heist is legal? You’ve done something very illegal, so your getaway car should also resemble that. So finish the heist in an illegal car in the most exciting and beautiful car chase in the history of the whole world.
