The Chinese company responsible for making electric car batteries for Tesla and Volkswagen AG, has developed a battery that lasts 16 years and 2 million kilometres.
Just to be clear, what this means is that the battery will work for 2 million kilometres driven over 16 years. Driving range isn’t affected – sorry, we still got a long way to go before we get 2 million kilometres with one single charging.
I mean 2 million kilometres is a really big achievement. Just as a comparison most EV makers warranty their batteries for 60,000 to 150,000 miles – roughly around 97,000 to 242,000 kilometres.
Chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), Zeng Yuqun has stated that “if someone places an order, we are ready to produce.” The new batteries would cost roughly 10% more than the current batteries used in EVs.
According to CATL, they have a two year contract with Tesla to start putting the new battery in the Model 3.
