The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ, the un-sportiest sports-cars on the market, are finally getting a proper and overdue upgrade!
Toyota and Subaru have committed to developing successors for the 86 (or GT86 if you’re from outside of Australia) and BRZ which were launched in 2012. For those, like me, who were disappointed by the performance and quality of the car, there are some good new! Autocar reports that the second generation 86 and BRZ will have more power and better features.
Before jumping in to the upgrades and specs, it’s worth noting that the Toyota version of the successors will be rebranded as the GR86 to join the Gazoo Racing division. The GR68 will be playing a key part in boosting Toyota’s image by joining the brand’s growing performance line-up including the GR Supra and the GR Yaris.
The next generation sports cars will have substantial changes compared to the existing models. The new model will be built on Toyota’s TNGA platform, as opposed to a Subaru platform like in the current models, since the existing architecture is not suited for rear wheel drive.
Subaru will be taking the lead with the powertrain development. The car will be fitted with a turbocharged 2.4 litre flat-four Boxer engine, currently used in the Ascent, which produces 225 horsepower. Forced induction would also provide torque upgrade over the existing model.
The existing models have out-dated equipment (surprised it didn’t come with a cassette tape), cheap material usage and not a nice finish overall, so, hopefully the new models will have improved aesthetics and upgraded technology.
These upgrades would most likely result in the price of the new models to increase. However, Toyota and Subaru will need to keep in mind the more premium models such as the Audi TT and BMW Z4. Also, Toyota would want to give its own Supra some breathing room.
I think that this is the standard that the cars should have been at from the very beginning but it be like that sometimes. Anyways, it sounds very promising!
